Kim and Scott’s wedding

Yesterday I filmed the wedding for Scott and Kim.  Yes, it was a Friday wedding, and it was a great one at that.

Having gotten to know Scott and Kim very well over the past year, I thoroughly enjoyed documenting the entire day, starting with the make up going on, and not ending until the last song had been played by the DJ.  They are a couple built to last, and are a complete joy to be around.

The entire day took place at the Westlake Village Inn.  I’m excited to get started editing, as we (My 2nd DSLR shooter, Jeff, and Marie, my assistant) caught some fantastic footage, in what is a beautiful location.  I’ll have to finish a handful of weddings first however, so I better get back to editing, as my aching body continues to recover from yesterday as well.

Here are a couple pics

Day by day process

I’m still trying to figure out this whole blog thing.  It’s primarily a blog dedicated to my job as a wedding professional.  On the other hand, you really need to write often to have any type of regular audience, right?  I don’t have the most exciting news to relay every day pertaining to weddings.  That said, please stay with me as I meander down the blog highway for the first time…

I did meet with a veteran videographer today, someone I will hire on occasion to film events for me.  I won’t hold the fact that he’s a Yankees fan against him.  😉 It’s interesting meeting other wedding videographers, especially ones who have been doing it for double the time that I have.  Los Angeles is so flooded with filmmakers, it can get tough to make a name for yourself.  Lots of competition…  Anyway…

I started the day off early, as the father of the groom for a wedding I am filming tomorrow (yes, a Friday)- stopped by to pick up a projector and big screen set up for a montage to be shown at the rehearsal dinner tonight.  I finished up a promotional video for another client, then opened a wedding that needed to be finished.  Meeting at noon, followed by errands to the post office and store, and preparing for tomorrow, and I haven’t gotten much done on Regina and Robert’s wedding today.  I still need to go pick up a steadicam from a local rental shop for tomorrow’s wedding (at Westlake Village Inn).  The gym is a must after that… stress relief!

That’s about all for now, but before I go… here’s a fun story… or not.  Last night I filmed a 10 minute set for a comedian at the Hollywood Improv.  I needed a break, so I did it for $60.  No big deal right?  Walk to my car afterwards to find a nice little parking ticket for $63.  I did meet some cool people though, including the comedian who I shot for, Hasan Minhaj, whose a funny dude.

As for a proposal idea of the day, I think I’m gonna have to make that a weekly deal…

Wake up, Edit, Meeting, Edit…

I think I can get used to this blog thing.  It keeps me accountable, even if noone is reading.  Granted, this is to be a professional blog as I am a wedding vendor, but hey, clients know that we are real people too right?

I started out this morning waking up unusually early for me.  When the hour starts with lucky number 7, I’m usually still dozing. I like to work late, and since I work from home, I can do that- I make my own hours.  😉

Anyway, it’s great starting early.  I finished one project by 10am, and put a dent in another one by 1:30pm.  At 2pm, I met with a very nice young couple about filming their wedding in October of 2012.  I only wish I could be THAT prepared! I’ve been filming weddings for over ten years and am only now starting a blog and dedicating a website to it.  http://onbendedkneefilm.com

Now, it’s back to editing after a few emails, and then perhaps the gym.  But before I go…

Proposal Idea of the Day…

Send your girlfriend flowers, wherever she works or goes to school.  If you live together and are both home, send them there, and make sure you are away when they come.   Include a note that asks “If you were able to choose, what would be your ideal way to be proposed to?”  (You can play with the wording, this is top of the head)…

At this point, the next time you see her, have the ring and be ready.  Whether it’s greeting her at home, or waiting outside her door at work, when she lays eyes on you next time, you should be On Bended Knee.

The idea is regardless of what her “dream” proposal would be, you just rewrote the script, because often times, the anticipation of greatness is better than the actual thing.

Monday…

Just sent out a wedding dvd. I have a book launch promotional video to edit and get online, before I start catching up with my queue of other weddings, which will get even larger this weekend.

I wish there was a shortcut to getting each wedding video done, but there is just no way to rush the creative process. I’m sure there is a Lebron James joke somewhere to be had in there, but we’ll stay on topic. Sometimes I’ll spend thirty plus minutes looking for that one close up smile of the bride, to use at the appropriate time in the musical montage. It’s all worth it in the end.

Proposal Idea of the day…
Take a picture of yourself holding out a ring right to the camera… When your girlfriend is asleep, or away, or wherever, change the background wallpaper on her computer. (Make sure there is a way to get it back later, though she might never want to change it…)
Turn her computer off.
If you can time it right, as she’s turning on the computer, position yourself somewhere behind her, and when she realizes what she’s looking at, and turns excitedly, there you are with the ring… On Bended Knee…

First Post

Hello world. At long last, I have started a blog. I look forward to bringing you updates and insightful information that will either inform, inspire, or encourage you. (At least that will be the intent).
My weekends consist of being at weddings, lots of them. There are certain things I see often, and there are things that catch me by surprise. I’ll let you know the best of what I see, and maybe even some tips on how to avoid certain pitfalls that I encounter.
I’ve been filming weddings for over ten years, so I have an overflow of content to catch up on, so that may pop up from time to time as well.

For now, I’ll try to stick to weekly updates on each wedding I film, as well as introduce you to some of the amazing vendors I get to work with. All that, and maybe some random movie quotes or opinions from time to time…

Thanks for stopping by, and I look forward to writing more.

ps- To go with my name, I’ll also try to come up with some original ideas for any of you out there thinking about getting down on one knee to pop the question. If you have any yourselves, feel free to post!
